According to the Roskosmos Deputy Director General, testing of the new Arktika-M satellite system will begin in the summer of 2018. It will consist of two satellites in highly elliptical orbit.
They will receive images of the North Pole and the surrounding areas, which is quite important bearing in mind the location of considerable parts of Russia. In fact, the weather service Arktika-M will perform the same function as the satellite Electro-L, which is located near the equator, except for one difference - the data will be collected in the area of the polar cap.
The satellites will monitor weather, global environmental changes and emergencies, such as natural disasters.
