Hubble will explore space for another 5 years

24.06.16

NASA will continue explorations using the Hubble Space Telescope. The contract valued at the sum of $ 196.3 million is valid until June 30, 2021.

The US telescopes remain in Earth orbit – special commission urged NASA to continue their usage.

Every few years the Commission studies various projects. They have considered such telescopes as Spitzer, Fermi, Kepler, etc. The issue of whether the Hubble and the Chandra, which have made many discoveries, should stay on orbit was not questioned. They were put in orbit in 1990 and 1999 respectively.

The European Newtone and Spitzer telescopes (the latter operates in the infrared range) are in orbit for at least 12 years. Termination of their usage is expected in 2 years.

The study of gamma-ray bursts is carrying out by the Swift. The NuSTAR is studying black holes and Supernovas in our galaxy. The Kepler telescope, with the help of which 2000 extrasolar planets were discovered, has been staying in orbit since 2009 and will remain there until running out of fuel. Probably it will happen in 2018.
